Scepter Studio Sessions

Pittsburgh, PA

2023

For more than fifteen years, Clear Story has collaborated with and supported arts and cultural institutions, including Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Museum in their exhibition and performance programming initiatives. Clear Story has designed and directed multi-media performances featuring the films of Andy Warhol all around the world. The firm has contributed lighting design expertise to wide ranging exhibits – from “Halston & Warhol: Silver & Suede” to “Marisol and Warhol Take New York.” In 2023, the firm’s lighting and spatial design expertise was brought together in Clear Story’s first full exhibition design for the Warhol – “The Velvet Underground & Nico - Scepter Studio Sessions.” The exhibition explored the groundbreaking group’s relationship with Andy Warhol, who produced their first record. It became one of the most influential albums in rock music. The exhibition featured Warhol “screen test” projections of the band members, archival photography from the recording session and an immersive soundscape – music from their first recording sessions in April 1966 at Scepter Studios in New York City. Clear Story worked closely with the curatorial and exhibitions team at the Warhol to develop every aspect of the exhibition design – physical display of objects and artifacts, lighting and projection design, furniture and architectural finishes. The museum’s second floor galleries were transformed into a low-key, hi-fidelity listening room, creating a comfortable and enveloping space to experience the Velvet Underground.
